IRS Job Potential

Posted by taxguru on April 3, 2010

I often receive emails from accounting students and others just starting out, asking about the best career potentials available. One path has always been working for the IRS or other government agencies. In terms of job security and likelihood of growth in the sector, we have seen that to be significant since our new president assumed power, and most definitely with this latest government takeover of another sector of the economy.
I’m not really recommending working for the government because it takes a very different kind of mindset than in the real world of private sector business; but for those who value job security most highly, it has its merits.
From Jay Leno, via NewsMax: “Do you know who will be in charge of healthcare? The IRS. You thought getting audited was bad? Wait until your next prostate exam.”

Unintended consequences?

Posted by taxguru on April 1, 2010

Debate brews over IRS expansion – As ordered by Queen Nancy Pelosi in her bizarro backwards world of Washington, DC, it’s now time to actually look at and debate what’s in the bill that she and her DemonRat disciples voted for a few weeks ago.

Feds Investigate Death Threats to IRS Employees After Health Bill Approval – Definitely not the most effective way to deal with IRS. Of course, there is a good chance that the media is exaggerating these threats, just as they are with the phony attacks on the DemonRat Rulers.

The Rich Can’t Pay for ObamaCare – As with any attack on those classified as evil rich by the DemonRats, those of us in the tax minimization profession will be doing our best to assist clients to avoid this new idiotic Medicare tax.

The Tax Police and the Health-Care. Mandate Americans of modest means may soon get a lesson in the power of the IRS.

Preparer ID Numbers

Posted by taxguru on March 25, 2010

IRS Provides Guidance on Identifying Numbers for Tax Return Preparers – IRS will be making it mandatory for paid preparers to use the special ID number. This is actually a good thing for us preparers. I have been using a PTIN ever since it became available, because that decreases the exposure of my Social Security number on tax returns I prepare.

You can download Form W-7P to apply for a PTIN.

Checking on IRS Prepayments

Posted by taxguru on March 22, 2010

We have a question on our 2009 tax return organizer asking clients if they received the $250 economic stimulus payments that IRS sent out to some people last year. Rather than checking the Yes or No box, most clients are writing in a question mark, forcing me to guess as to what to enter into the tax program.

This must be a common problem all over the country, with IRS most like receiving a ton of phone calls asking about those payments because they have actually set up a do it yourself automated look-up tool on their website to allow people and their tax preparers (or anyone else who knows their ID numbers, birth-dates and zip-codes) to see if those payments were made.

Since the payments were to individuals, a separate look-up needs to be done for each spouse on a joint tax return.
