Social Security Collapsing
Posted by taxguru on August 13, 2010
For well over three decades, I have been warning that the Social Security system is a scam that would be illegal if set up or administered by anyone other than our imperial rulers in DC.
As I have long been predicting, the only ways in which it can be saved will be to deny benefits to those considered evil rich (aka means testing), requiring SS taxes be paid on more kinds of income (investment, rental etc.), and delaying benefit payouts until a higher age, so that more people will die off before cashing in. These kinds of changes are currently under discussion in DC.

PTIN’s will need to be renewed
Posted by taxguru on August 5, 2010
According to this item from CCH, we will need to renew our special IRS assigned Preparer Tax Identification Numbers every year and pay a fee of at least $50. Supposedly, IRS will start this process in September 2010.
This is an expansion of the preparer registration process that IRS announced in this January 2010 news release.

Tax hikes for the rich: Can the economy afford them? – In CNN’s typical logic, all money belongs to the government, and we should be ever so grateful if our rulers allow us to keep any of it.

Trying to predict 2011 taxes…
Posted by taxguru on July 29, 2010
With the expiring tax cuts on the horizon and the possibility of their being extended, trying to get a handle on what a person’s 2011 tax picture will look like is more difficult than at any time I can recall in my 35+ years in this profession. Luckily, there are some folks developing tools to make some quick calculations possible. Specifically, this tax calculator from the Tax Foundation, called MyTaxBurden, is very interesting. It allows you to input your estimated income and deduction amounts and see the Federal income tax under three different assumptions; the Bush tax cuts expire, they are extended, and one of Obama’s proposed budgets.
