Some interesting items from their news page.
IRS Releases FY 2012 Data Book – A lot of interesting stats for us numbers nerds, such as the fact that there were twice as many S corp tax returns filed as C corp returns last year.
IRS Releases the Dirty Dozen Tax Scams for 2013 – There is never a shortage of tax related scams around the country. Most of these are the same as in previous years, but the phony 1099-OID refund claim was a new one to me.

Drudge had this unusual story of a female IRS agent threatening a male taxpayer for sex.
“Taxing Relationship”: Man claims IRS agent coerced him into sex
This story reminds me of this clip from the TV show Nip/Tuck that I posted a few years ago.

It’s time for another reminder to not be so quick sending IRS its copies of 1099s and W-2s. I just sent this message to client after he sent me copies 1099s that he had already mailed to IRS.
Thanks for sending me the copies of the 1099s you submitted to IRS. I have printed them out and put them in the corp’s tax file folder.
In the future, it would be a good idea to wait until some time in February to send IRS its copies. The recipients are supposed to be given their copies by January 31; but IRS doesn’t need its copies until Feb 28. The reason for the extra month is to give everyone a chance to spot any errors prior to sending the IRS copies in.
If you do later send in a Corrected 1099 to correct an already filed erroneous form, IRS will often miss the “Corrected” box entry and will show both of the forms as valid ones in their computer and expect to see the total of both of the amounts on the payee’s tax return, creating a mess to straighten out.
Let me know if you have any questions.
Kerry

IRS has released the latest statistics on audit coverage for the Fiscal Year Ended 9/30/12. The actual year to year tables of stats can be downloaded. It is a 20 page pdf, with the last 11 pages completely blank.
The ones I find most interesting are below. Click on them for the easier to read full size version.

IRS Plans Jan. 30 Tax Season Opening For 1040 Filers
This won’t affect our clients because we normally only prepare a few returns by April 15; but it will sure mess up the big assembly-line chain operations. Their bread & butter are early filers, desperate for quick refunds.

Romney Should Expose IRS as Enforcer for Obamacare – Great idea from Byron York. Having a common enemy we can all hate is a centuries old tactic in generating political support. 0Bambi and Bite-Me are using successful business owners and other so-called evil rich as their common enemy. Why shouldn’t the GOP use the IRS in the same way?
