For several years now, various governmental entities have been threatening to start levying a per mile tax on vehicles because they aren’t satisfied with what they are already taking in at the fuel pumps and toll collectors.
It looks like,Oregon is going to start that process, which will most likely spread across the county. Of course, as is always the case, this will end being an additional tax and not just a replacement for an existing one.
.
This issue reminds me of the following verse from George Harrison’s classic TaxMan song.
If you drive a car, I’ll tax the street
If you try to sit, I’ll tax your seat
If you get too cold I’ll tax the heat If you take a walk, I’ll tax your feet
George Harrison’s classic song “TaxMan” has long been a motivating force for many of us in this profession. Even though it was intended to be somewhat satirical, with examples of ridiculous taxes that couldn’t possibly come true, some of our Big Government Rulers have always seen that as a challenge, such as in this section of the song.
If you drive a car, I’ll tax the street If you try to sit, I’ll tax your seat If you get too cold I’ll tax the heat If you take a walk, I’ll tax your feet
I couldn’t help but think of that when I saw this news story from the Left Coast, where eventually nothing will be left untaxed.
For those of you who are new to my blog and websites, I do still have an assorted collection of musical artists performing TaxMan on my ScreenCast site for your listening and downloading pleasure.
I recently came across a concert of Beatles music from 7/6/13 by Tim Palmieri in Sterling Stage, NY which includes this interesting rendition of George Harrison’s “TaxMan.”

For ages, I have been collecting and posting different version’s of George Harrison’s classic and timeless TaxMan song. During a CPE webinar today, one of the polling questions asked which musical artist hadn’t recorded a song called TaxMan; Elvis Presley, Lucky Dube or The Beatles. The answer was Elvis.
The presenter explained that he had come across a song by South African reggae artist Lucky Dube. This was news to me; so I searched YouTube and found a number of recordings of Lucky Dube performing this song. One of them even includes the lyrics.
TAXMAN (Composed by Lucky Dube)
I pay my gardener To clean up my garden I pay my doctor To check out da other ting I pay my lawyer To fight for my rights And I pay my body guard To guard my body There’s only one man I pay But I don’t know what I’m paying for I’m talking about the taxman x3
CHORUS
What have you done for me lately Mr Taxman x4
You take from the rich Take from the poor You even take from me Can’t understand it now I pay for the police To err…I don’t know why ‘Cause if my dollar was good enough There wouldn’t be so much crime In the Streets They tell me you’re a fat man And you always take and Never give
CHORUS
What have you done for me lately Mr Taxman
Till fade
I had never heard of Lucky Dube before now and was bummed out to read in this Wikipedia article, that he was killed by carjackers in 2007 in South Africa at the age of only 43. As you can hear in these examples, he sounds a lot like Bob Marley, another reggae artist who died much too young, at 36.

As any music fan knows, the music of the Beatles is still very popular and often covered by other musicians, especially in live shows. I recently did a simple search on the Live Music Archive for TaxMan and it came up with 212 hits, including the following 13 since the beginning of 2012. Click on the show name to get access to all of the tracks from that show.
My collection of different versions of George Harrison’s timeless classic continues to grow with this jazzy version by a European group I just learned of, Tok Tok Tok.
I have also set up a public folder on my ScreenCast account, where I will be posting more versions of TaxMan that can be downloaded and played in its own player. It also has a special rss feed that should announce new uploads. I have several dozen versions of TaxMan scattered around my different drives; so this will be a handy way to consolidate them into one location.
