TaxMan Parody

Posted by taxguru on February 23, 2017

Over the past decades, I have posted dozens of different versions of George Harrison’s classic song, TaxMan.  Some of them can be found on my ScreenCast page.

While those are all different artists singing the song in their own styles, I just came across a different variation.  Weird Al Yankovic recently posted a new parody of TaxMan, called Pac-Man.  While Weird Al’s words no longer relate to the dreaded taxes that we have to pay, the music is still the same as it was on the Beatles’ Revolver album.  I defy anyone to listen to this and not also hear the original lyrics in their head.

The Other “TaxMan” Song

Posted by taxguru on June 21, 2016

Over the past few decades, I have posted several renditions by various artists of George Harrison’s classic TaxMan song which was first heard on the 1966 Beatles album, Revolver.

Here is a new performance of a similar song, Cheap Trick’s “Taxman, Mr. Thief” that is often referred to as just TaxMan.

This is from a recent episode (#75) of Live From Daryl’s House, where Daryl Hall performs a variety of songs with other musicians.

This song is not as well known or widely covered as George Harrison’s, but has very similar sentiments.  It was first released on Cheap Trick’s debut album in 1977.  A cover version of this song by The Dream Police was included in Coverville’s Tax Day Tribute that I wrote about in April.

The lyrics, courtesy of AZLyrics:

You work hard, you make money
There ain’t no one in this world who can stop you
You work hard, you went hungry
Now the taxman is out to get you
You worked hard
And slaved and slaved for years
Break your back sweat a lot
Well, it’s just not fair
He hates you, he loves money
And he’ll steal your shit and think that it’s funny
Like the Beatles he ain’t human
Now the taxman is out to get you
You worked hard
And you slaved and slaved for years
You played
And you played and played for years
Taxman, Mr. Heath (he’s a thief)
He’s looking for run-in, yeah
Taxman, Mr. Heath (he’s a thief)
He’s looking for run-in, yeah
You work hard, you make money
There ain’t no one in the world who can stop you
You work hard, you went hungry
Now the taxman is out to get you
You worked hard
And you slaved and slaved for years
Break your back sweat a lot
Well, it’s just not fair
Taxman, Mr. Heath (he’s a thief)
He’s looking for run-in, yeah
Taxman, Mr. Heath (he’s a thief)
He’s looking for run-in, yeah

Coverville’s Tax Day Tribute

Posted by taxguru on April 11, 2016

For a number of years, I have been a big fan of and subscriber to Brian Ibbott’s Coverville music channel on iTunes and website, where he assembles eclectic mixes of cover versions of songs on a particular theme or by certain artists.

This is the first year that I can recall him doing a full show based on our American Tax Day.  It’s 85 minutes long, with 18 cover versions of songs about taxes and money.  It should be no surprise that it begins with a new version of the song I have been featuring for the past 40 years, George Harrison’s ageless “TaxMan.”

You can listen to the full 85 minute show, download it as one big (97.3 mb) MP3, as well as purchase the songs individually from the Coverville website.

Coincidentally, this is Coverville Episode Number 1120.  While it is labeled as a tribute to the 1040, I don’t know if Brian Ibbott is aware of the fact that American corporations report their income on Form 1120.

While clicking around on the Coverville page for this show, I came across a link to a list of 11 different cover versions of “TaxMan.”  I have some of these already, but others are new to me, as they may very well be for other fellow collectors of this song.

Per Mile Tax

Posted by taxguru on May 20, 2015

For several years now, various governmental entities have been threatening to start levying a per mile tax on vehicles because they aren’t satisfied with what they are already taking in at the fuel pumps and toll collectors.

It looks like,Oregon is going to start that process, which will most likely spread across the county. Of course, as is always the case, this will end being an additional tax and not just a replacement for an existing one.

Oregon to test pay-per-mile idea as replacement for gas tax

.
This issue reminds me of the following verse from George Harrison’s classic TaxMan song.

If you drive a car, I’ll tax the street
If you try to sit, I’ll tax your seat
If you get too cold I’ll tax the heat
If you take a walk, I’ll tax your feet

Life Imitating Art

Posted by taxguru on May 6, 2014

George Harrison’s classic song “TaxMan” has long been a motivating force for many of us in this profession. Even though it was intended to be somewhat satirical, with examples of ridiculous taxes that couldn’t possibly come true, some of our Big Government Rulers have always seen that as a challenge, such as in this section of the song.

If you drive a car, I’ll tax the street
If you try to sit, I’ll tax your seat
If you get too cold I’ll tax the heat
If you take a walk, I’ll tax your feet

I couldn’t help but think of that when I saw this news story from the Left Coast, where eventually nothing will be left untaxed.

For those of you who are new to my blog and websites, I do still have an assorted collection of musical artists performing TaxMan on my ScreenCast site for your listening and downloading pleasure.

Lucky Dube’s TaxMan song

Posted by taxguru on June 27, 2013

For ages, I have been collecting and posting different version’s of George Harrison’s classic and timeless TaxMan song.  During a CPE webinar today, one of the polling questions asked which musical artist hadn’t recorded a song called TaxMan; Elvis Presley, Lucky Dube or The Beatles. The answer was Elvis.

The presenter explained that he had come across a song by South African reggae artist Lucky Dube.  This was news to me; so I searched YouTube and found a number of recordings of Lucky Dube performing this song. One of them even includes the lyrics.

TAXMAN
(Composed by Lucky Dube)

I pay my gardener
To clean up my garden
I pay my doctor
To check out da other ting
I pay my lawyer
To fight for my rights
And I pay my body guard
To guard my body
There’s only one man I pay
But I don’t know what I’m paying for
I’m talking about the taxman x3

CHORUS

What have you done for me lately
Mr Taxman x4

You take from the rich
Take from the poor
You even take from me
Can’t understand it now
I pay for the police
To err…I don’t know why
‘Cause if my dollar was good enough
There wouldn’t be so much crime
In the Streets
They tell me you’re a fat man
And you always take and
Never give

CHORUS

What have you done for me lately
Mr Taxman

Till fade

I had never heard of Lucky Dube before now and was bummed out to read in this Wikipedia article, that he was killed by carjackers in 2007 in South Africa at the age of only 43.  As you can hear in these examples, he sounds a lot like Bob Marley, another reggae artist who died much too young, at 36.
