Excuse me for not getting too excited about the latest tax reform proposal that does seem to be receiving a lot of attention. While it has some good points, the real world will cause it to end up pretty much like the dozens of other reforms over the past decades. It’s pretty far fetched to expect much positive change in the tax code from a Senate that is controlled by DemonRats and a signature from a communist acting pResident.
This comic that Sherry found is similar to my infamous poster of how tax legislation works.

I’m not endorsing Herman Cain or his 999 plan, but this video he put out has a good look at the deplorable state of our current tax system. As always, identifying the problem is easy. It’s just impossible for everyone to agree on a solution.

I was taking a tax update webinar this morning and the instructor, Annette Nellen, had this picture of the signing ceremony from the monumental 1986 Tax reform Act, which made several major changes to the tax code.

Here are some interesting recent articles about that law:
By Annette Nellen:
25th Anniversary of the Tax Reform Act of 1986. Is the 25th anniversary a time to celebrate it or wonder what happened to it?By Martin Feldstein:
The Tax Reform Evidence From 1986 Experience implies that the combination of base broadening and rate reduction would raise revenue equal to about 4% of existing tax revenue.
Update:
I couldn’t resist the temptation to show what was really going through their minds at that signing ceremony. Click on the image for a larger version.

Time For A Tax Reform – For obvious reasons, we will be seeing plenty of these kinds of articles over the next few weeks. In this one, Bruce Bartlett is calling for a massive overhaul of the tax code, similar to the one done in 1986.
